Child mental retardation is a condition in which intelligence is below normal, accompanied by weakness in the lesson, the development of self adjustment and delay reaching adult levels. But there are some children who are mentally retarded are actually still able to perform the activities to take care of himself or socializing, though not as good as a normal child. How a mother can perform its role properly as an "educator" let alone educate children who are mentally retarded, so that children get precedent figure, considering that she was the first person closest to the child and the family is the first social environment of children. This research is, qualitative research that aims to describe the extent of the role of mother in the care of mentally retarded children. The method in this study used qualitative data collection method in the form of interviews that reveal aspects of the role of mother in the care of mentally retarded children associated with child's skills in self-help, self-directed, motor skills, job skills and communication skills with others . The results of this study broadly describe the role of mother in the care of mentally retarded children is that a mother plays an important role in educating children in the household environment, for the mother who is nearly every day at home, because she gives lessons on respect, obedience , self-control, honesty and examples of social attitudes to children, so children can make adjustments yourself well, because what's gotten in the family will form a pattern of attitude towards people, objects or life in general later. Various efforts made by the mother in guiding mentally retarded children to achieve an initial adjustment as a cornerstone in the face of the wider society among which, to give encouragement to children associated with various skills to be possessed, to guide the child to control his behavior that would can encourage children to be able to relate with others and most importantly provide children the opportunity to learn.
