This study aims to analyze the independence of learning and metacognition of students based on HOTS. The type and consideration of the study used were qualitative descriptive. The research subjects used were students of class XI MIPA 1 of SMA Negeri 1 Malang. Data collection is a document (RPP teacher), a questionnaire of learning independence (adaptation), HOTS type test questions, and interviews. The main instrument of this study was a test question sheet validated by a validator, a Mathematics Education lecturer. The results obtained as many as 24 students filled out the questionnaire awards and HOTS test questions. There are 8 students with good learning independence and 16 students with good learning independence. Back to the top on the HOTS metacognition problem that asks students to be in the high metacognition category.
