Reading is one of the important skills of English beside listening, writing, and speaking. Reading is defined as an active attempt to understand a writer’s message (Robinson, 1980: 6), which the students must master in order that they can follow the process of English teaching and learning. In the teaching and learning process, the teacher should follow the material from the syllabus and make the goal of teaching learning process easier and to get the great level of graduation. Therefore the writer was interested in investigating those phenomena. This study is entitled “THE IMPLEMENTATION OF “READING II” AT ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MUHAMMADIYAH MALANG. The research was conducted to know whether the material of “Reading II” accordance with English Department syllabus or not and the teachers’ consideration to decide whether he/she implement or not implement the syllabus. The research design used in this study was a descriptive qualitative design. The researcher took two lectures who were teaching “Reading II” at English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Malang academic year of 20062007 as the research subject. The result of this study showed: the teacher of “Reading II Subject” in academic year 20062007 modified their own syllabus, the teacher whose code was (05006) implemented all the materials that offered by English Department syllabus and used the same textbook in teaching learning process, but he had different objective, teaching method and evaluation from English department. While the teacher whose code was (13087) used different textbook from English Department, so he implemented several material on his textbook that match with English Department. Moreover the objective, teaching method and evaluation on his syllabus was different from English Department syllabus. Even though both teachers modified their own syllabus, they still faced difficulties in implementing it. The difficulties were the teacher had to adapt with students English skills, topic and the materials, because of the characteristic and heterogeneous level of English proficiency of every class were different. And the teacher difficult to find the references that offered by the Department. This study hopefully can give or help the teacher to teach “Reading II subject” at English Department.
