Abstract

This study aims to determine and describe students' mathematical communication skills in problem solving on the Pythagorean theorem material based on Polya's procedures. Polya's problem solving stages consist of the stages of understanding the problem, planning the problem solving, doing the solving plan, and checking again. The study used the subject of eighth grade students of Aisyiyah Muhammadiyah 3 Malang Junior High School which was taken by 6 students based on good, sufficient, and poor mathematical communication criteria. The research approach used is qualitative, while the type of research is descriptive. Data collection is done by tests and interviews. The results showed students with good mathematical communication ability criteria were able to solve problems based on Polya's procedures. Students with mathematical communication ability criteria are quite unable to solve problems based on Polya's procedure at the stage of making a plan by changing a mathematical information in the form of a picture, students do not realize the need to design actions first, students just go ahead and students do not see the results of completion that have been made. Students with mathematical communication ability criteria are less able to solve problems based on Polya's procedures, students do not meet the stage of making plans by changing mathematical information in the form of drawings, making plans using and choosing mathematical information or pictures to solve problems, and students do not look back the results of the settlement that has been made.
