Abstract

Light construction steel is the metal most often used by humans in addition to the presence of other metals such as copper, silver, gold and so on. This type of steel is often subjected to bending treatment especially in marine manufacturing or in coastal and offshore areas. This study aims to analyze the rate of corrosion in light construction steel with specimens in the form of light construction steel plates. To determine the effect of bending angle treatment and day immersion variations in mild steel construction on corrosion rate. The process of applying pressure to the surface is very likely to corrode material, especially steel material, so that low carbon steel (mild steel) is easily corroded due to the carbon content of less than 0.25%. The bending angle variations used in this study are the 45º, 60º and 75º bending angles with variations in the immersion time of 3 days, 6 days, 9 days, 12 days and 15 days which produce data in the form of a number of differences in initial weight and final weight of the specimen ie loss weight (weight loss) using the CPR (Corrosion Penetration Rate) or better known as the corrosion rate. The method used in this study is a silent dip by referring to ASTM G1 standards, namely Standard Practice for Preparing, Cleaning and Evaluation Corrosion Test Specimens and ASTM G31 - 72 namely Standard Practice for Laboratory Immersion Corrosion Testing of Metals. The results of the largest corrosion rate occurred at the beginning of the immersion of 3 days, namely the bending angle of 45º to get the results of the largest corrosion rate of 0.31084 mmpy and the smallest corrosion rate occurred at the bending angle of 75º to obtain a corrosion rate of 0.10664 mmpy. The treatment of bending angle is very influential on the corrosion rate, the smaller the bending angle, the greater the corrosion rate will be, this is because the specimen layer is more exposed due to tensile force (tension) can create a gap in the specimen and it gives an influence on the process of corrosion.
