Abstract

Coconut coir fibers are natural fibers or biocomposites that have organic properties that have good mechanical potential, abundant availability and have many uses. Utilization that is not yet optimal in the industrial scale to natural fibers like this is still classified as waste. One of the uses is to compile composite material mixed with 157 BQTN-EX polyester resin and MEKPO (metyl ethylketon peroxide) catalyst. This study aims to explain the effect of volume fraction and fiber orientation on tensile properties and the most optimal combination of materials. The research conducted is expected to produce materials with superior properties from the constituent materials to produce new materials that are better and more economical. In this study used experimental research or True Experiment Research with three iterations in each specimen variation. Making material by comparing the ratio of volume fraction and orientation of coconut fiber 5%: 0o, 5%: 45o, 5%: 90o - 10%: 0o, 10%: 45o 10%: 90o and 15%: 0o 15%: 45o 15 %: 90o with the hand lay-up process, the standard used in tensile testing is ASTM D 638-84 M1. From the tensile test results obtained the highest tensile strength values at the ratio of volume fraction and fiber orientation of 15%: 90o with the results of the stress of 5,20 KN / mm2 and modulus of elasticity with a value of 1,70 KN / mm2. It can be concluded that the presence of fiber and the increasing number of fibers can increase the mechanical value of the composite material.
