Abstract

This research aimed to discover kinds of games that the student teachers’ used in teaching English for Young Learners (EYL) at University of Muhammadiyah Malang, the difficulties faced by student teachers in teaching English for Young Learners, and the ways student teachers dealt with the problems. In this research, descriptive qualitative design was implemented to analyze the data. The subjects of this research were six student teachers of EYL classes from first to sixth grade. Non-participant observation and interview were conducted as techniques of data collection. The results showed that student teachers applied different games in every class; (1) Touching Pictures (2) Rangku Alu (3) Whispering (4) Guessing (5) Matching and (6) Skip challenge. In applying those games, the student teachers found four major problems. The first problem was about the place, the class was too small so it made the students difficult to move around. The second problem was about the materials, the student teachers were undergraduate students; they still found it challenging to manage the classroom. The third problem was discipline. Some students were more focused on the activity rather than paying attention to the student teachers' instruction. The last problem was about student teachers' anxiety. There were some ways that the student teachers used to deal with the problems. The problem related to the place was dealt by rearranging the class into a U shape seating arrangement and doing an outdoor activity. The problem related to the materials were dealt by developing their teaching techniques and preparing teaching material well. The problem related to discipline was dealt by giving yel-yel to make students calm down and focus on the teaching and learning in the classroom. The last problem related to the student teachers’ anxiety could be dealt by good preparation of teaching techniques and materials as well as peer suggestions by co-teachers.
