Abstract

In Indonesia there are still many who use conventional types of chisels, one of them is HSS type. Especially in small to medium scale industries. This is because HSS chisels are tough, easy to sharpen, cheaper in price, easy to obtain. The purpose of this study was to determine the results of HSS chisel wear and digital photo microscopy on variations in cutting speed on ST60 steel. The method used in this study is an experimental method, which is turning with variations in cutting speed. This research uses medium carbon steel ST60 to see how strong / far the material used can survive, and to see at what speed the tool is efficient for turning. The variation of cutting speed used in this study is 24, 30, 41, 50 mm / min. the greatest tool wear results occur at a cutting speed of 50 mm / min and exceeding the maximum wear limit. Summary of cutting length conditions that provide the optimal tool life of the HSS tool for ST60 steel turning by varying the cutting speed to 4 levels. With reference to the tool wear value Vb (0.3 - 0.6 mm) in this test the wear value obtained, the result is that the length of turning (Lc) on the tool life is influenced by cutting speed.
