Abstract

Listening is very important in learning English. Everyone who wants to learn English well should be able to master listening as one of the English skills. In fact, there are many students who have problems in their listening comprehension, especially the second year students of SMA Islam Batu. The propose of this study is to know the problems of students in learning listening. This study is focused no answering these three research problems: First, what problems of the students face in learning listening?. Second, what are the causes of those problems?. Third, what are the solutions to solve those problems?. The researcher used descriptive qualitative design because the researcher want to describe the problems of students faced in learning listening. The researcher took seven students of SMA Islam Batu as the subject of research. The collecting the data, the researcher used observation and interview. The result of the research showed that the second years students of SMA Islam Batu had problems in relation with the students were not familiar with the speakers’ pronunciation, the students did not understand the messages, and the students did not pay attention to the teacher during the teaching and learning process. These problems made them felt bored and uninteresting in learning listening. The causes that faced by students are the speakers’ speak too fast (teacher, speaker’s in cassette), the students lack of vocabulary, and the teacher use monotonous method of teaching. In dealing with the problems, causes that faced by students, there had some solutions for overcoming their problem in learning listening: first, the students asked the teacher to speak slowly/ the students asked the teacher to repeat the cassette several times. Second, the students asked the teacher to find new technique to improve students’ vocabulary. Third, the students asked the teacher to use interesting method of teaching.
