Abstract

In facing education 4.0, teachers should consider a student-centered approach. It is because one characteristic in education 4.0 is students learn together while the teacher act as a facilitator. It implies that in education 4.0, the teaching and learning process is more student-centered. Therefore, Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) can be an alternative approach for the teacher to implement in their classes. In Indonesia, many researchers have proved TBLT brings a positive effect on their students. However, there is little research that covers the teachers’ side. Indeed, researching the teacher side brings beneficial for teachers, students, and organizations. Thus, the researcher wants to contribute another voice to the growth of TBLT research in Indonesia. In this research, the researcher used qualitative research to get a better insight of teacher perception and challenge in implementing TBLT. The research subjects were 4 experienced teachers in University level. It consists of 2 General English teachers and 2 ESP teachers. The data were collected through interviews and narrative frame. The results of the research showed that the teachers view TBLT as a positive approach. TBLT gives students a lot of change and flexibility to speak in the target language. Also, students can feel the real-world context in the use of the target language. For the challenge, the teachers perceived the students’ English proficiency, motivation, and class size are the hindrances in implementing the approach.
