Abstract

Suren (Toona sureni Merr.) is fast growing, has a short cycle and high economic value. Therefore suren cultivation is highly recommended to meet the community's wood needs. Suren seeds are seeds that are difficult to store, germination capacity is easy to go down and low percentage of growth. This research was conducted with the aim to determine the effect of shelf life and type of packaging on viability of suren seeds (T. sureni Merr.). This study uses a different shelf life and packaging material to maintain seed viability when storing. Good storage techniques must be applied to meet the needs of seedlings. This research was conducted from June to July 2017 in the forestry laboratory (Green house) University of Muhammadiyah Malang Jl. Raya Tlogomas No. 246 Malang. This study uses a shelf life treatment (M) ie the seeds are stored for (M1 = 1 week; M2 = 2 weeks; M3 = 3 weeks; M4 = 4 weeks) and the type of packaging treatment (P) is (P1 = black silver mulch plastic bag ; P2 = aluminum foil bag; P3 = cloth bag; P4 = can). The results showed that the treatment of a shelf life of 1 week (M1) and the type of aluminum foil package (P2) tended to give the best results on the percentage of germination percentage, germination rate, germination rate, percentage of normal sprouts and percentage of abnormal sprouts. The shelf life (M) and packaging type (P) treatments have a very significant effect on the viability of suren seeds (T. sureni Merr.).
