Abstract

Reading is one of the basic language skills that must be mastered by the students. But, the students still faced many problems in comprehending English text. This study is intended to find what problems are faced by the students in comprehending English text and what factors may cause the problems. The research design of the study is descriptive research. The populations of this study are third year students of SMUN II Malang and the sample was one class of science, one class of social and one class of language class. The instruments used to collect the data were test and questionnaire. The result of data analysis showed that the problem that faced by students in science, social and language class were in Understanding Vocabulary. Based on the result of the questionnaire, researcher found out that the major factors that cause the problems in comprehension of the text are lack of vocabulary 68% (67 students), The next problems were grammar 17% (16 students). This problems arised because the student’s problems in comprehending English text were in grammar, identifying the main idea 8% (7 students), and the too long text that made them bored 5% (4 students). In identifying the main idea, the too long texts were also caused problems for the students and the last is lack of time to understand the whole text 3% (3 students). Lacks of time to understanding the whole text were also caused the problems for the students in comprehending English text.
