Abstract

Literature is human’s experience, conviction, feeling, ideas, thought, enthusiasm in creating description that inspire, by using language as medium. Part of literature is poetry and the part of poetry is lyric especially in music. Music is the popular language in the world. It can be welcomed universally, from any member of society. Nowadays, music has become science which has a rule and when demonstrated, it will become beautiful. This study was aimed to find out the general meaning, detailed meaning, and message inside lyrical song “Unwell” in Matchbox 20’s album “More Than You Think You Are”. This study used the descriptive method research as the research design because there was no treatment in this study. Meanwhile, the approach was objective approach to interpret the core of Matchbox 20’s “Unwell” based on the writer’s personal view toward the literary work. Besides, library research was the most appropriate due to the problems of study. The general meaning of lyrical song “Unwell” Matchbox 20’s album “More Than You Think You Are” was about expectation of respecting other people to make a better relationship each other which can make us live in harmony. The detailed meaning of lyrical song “Unwell” in Matchbox 20’s album “More than you think you are”, in the first stanza expressed that the singer was very lonely and did not have any friend to share his feelings with. In the second stanza, he realized that there was a hope for a better future. In the third stanza, he felt there was something that would disturb his life. In the fourth stanza, people could tell him crazy, but if they knew him longer and better, they would know him with his real personality. In the fifth stanza, for people that had known him, they would think and realize that at that time he was out of his habits. In the sixth stanza, to find the solution to his problem, he ignored anything that happened around him. In the seventh stanza, he realized many people were talking about him and it made him think that his act that day was unusual. In the eighth stanza, to find the answer of a problem was not easy. He tried to find the answer of his problem, but the harder he tried, the more complicated the problem was. In the ninth stanza, problem that he faced at that time had disturbed his life; even in his sleep he had a bad dream. The message found on “Unwell” in Matchbox 20’s album “More Than You Think You Are” was that the singer wanted to remind the readers that as human beings we would never go far from problems, and they might influence our life. But we should listen to our heart, always be optimistic that every problem has the way out, and tomorrow will be better than today.
