Abstract

Background of Study: One of the behavioral symptoms that commonly occured during stress is the change of appetite which leads to weight gain. Weight gain causes the level of plasma insulin, blood lipids, lipoproteins, and blood pressure to increase. Therefore the excessive body weight gain increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. Objective of Study: To determine the influence of the psychological stress level effects on weight gain of the female students of FK UMM 2016. Methodology: Observational analytic study with cross sectional approach. Research subjects were 62 FK UMM female students of 2016. The study was conducted at FK UMM for the distribution of questionnaires, and at UMM Hospital for data collection on weight medical records. The results of the study were tested with Kruskal Wallis, Mann Whitney, and Logistic Regression test. Results of Study: The research showed that 84% of female students of FK UMM 2016 experienced stress and 73% of them experienced weight gain. The results of Kruskal-Wallis test showed a significant number of 0.015 that means that were stress level influence on weight gain of the female students of FK UMM 2016. The Mann Whitney test results showed a significant number of <0.05 non-stressed college students compared with mild, moderate, severe stress. It means that the students that have stress tend to have higher weight gain. Logistic Regression test results showed an odd ratio > 1 in mild, moderate, and severe stress, that means increases the chance of weight gain. Conclusion: There was significant influence of the psychological stress level effect on weight gain of the female students of Faculty of Medicine, University of Muhammadiyah Malang 2016.
