Abstract

Sociolinguistics is the branch of linguistics which studies the relation between language and society. One of the language variation of the sociolinguistics is slang. Slang is the informal language which created and used by a particular social group in their community. This study focused on the slangs and the meanings found in 50 Cents song lyrics in Get Rich or Die Tryin album 2003.The slang was usually used by African American singers in a hip hop or rap music. This study was descriptive qualitative research, because the data were collected in the form of words, not in the form of numbers. The object of this study is slang used in 50 Cents song lyrics in the three sampled songs; Pimp, Wanksta, and 21 Questions in Get rich or Die Tryin album 2003. The results are the slangs and the meanings used in hip hop music like 50 Cent song lyrics that was usually used by African American singer. Slangs did not always have a negative, but also positive meaning and they were not always considered rude word. Slang used depends on the user or singer as their feeling expression to others.
