ANSHORI, MOH.ISA (2006) A STUDY ON TEACHER’S STRATEGY IN GIVING MOTIVATION TO THE EFL LEARNERSAT MA AL-ISHLAH PONDOK PESANTREN LAMONGAN. Other thesis, University of Muhammadiyah Malang.
In teaching learning process at MA Al-Ishlah Pondok Pesantren, the students are less motivation in learning English because they think that religious subject are the most important one than other especially English language. Besides, they were though that English is only used by non-moslems. So it can be concluded that they do not need English subject, even they are not motivated to learn English. The purposes of this study are to know the teacher’s strategy in giving motivation to the students in pre-teaching, while-teaching, and post teaching activities at MA Al-Ishlah Pondok Pesantren Lamongan. In the present study, the writer used descriptive qualitative research. The subject of this study was the second year English teacher at MA Al-Ishlah. The instruments used to collect the data were observation and interview. From the result of study, the strategies that were proposed in the theory to increase students’ motivation in teaching learning activities are found in opening the lesson, reviews the previous material, introducing the new materials, when the teacher gave score to them in order to make the class enjoyable, he gave reward to them, review the lesson, and give back previous homework. And the researcher also found that the English teacher used other strategies to motivate their learner that were not proposed in the theory. Those are: giving rewards, the teacher did not explain or translate directly the new term for the students, revolving English cassettes, creating internal competitions for the students such as; telling story, debate and speech, and dialogue journal. The strategies were very helpful for the teacher because he can attract the students’ motivation. However, the strategies used by the teacher were low or less interest because those do not give various classroom activities. Besides, it also can not make the classroom becomes more fun and dynamic. However, it is better if the teacher uses other teaching media to support the strategies already used. For example; the teacher may invite the students to study outside of class or invite native speaker. By using various strategies, the students will more enjoy to join the English class.
