Abstract

Learning in small groups can increase self awareness us individuals are eneuraged to express opinions and relante their own ideas / preference and receivd feed back or get relation from others. One strategy for effective learning in smalls groups is the jigsaw moel in the jigsaw classroom, students,in small groups depend on one another task, or solve a problem. This study is aims to know whether jigsaw model could increase students’ reading comprehension and could increase students’ participation in reading comprehension activities in SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Batu. This study was class action research design because the writer did activity or experiment which not only increase students’ reading comprehension but also observed students ‘participation in the class using jigsaw model. The data of this study were collected by observation. The result of this study showed that cooperative learning using jigsaw model could increase the students’ comprehension in reading because the members of the groups were led to solve the problem together. They were able to help one another in understanding the content of the text and find solution of the problems. Cooperative learning using jigsaw model also increased the students’ participation in class discussion as well as their ability to speak English. It had been proved the cooperative learning using jigsaw model forced every member of the group to participate. In conclusion, it is shown that jigsaw model could increase the students’ achievement in a reading comprehension in spite of their low motivation and little interest in learning English and could increase students’ participation. It had been proved that the students’ more active made them directly involved in the process of comprehending a text, which also increased their reading achievement.
