Abstract

Education is the acquisition of knowledge, skills and values that permit an individual to function and make decisions perceived as self-enhancing. Based on UU Sisdiknas No. 20/ 2003, there are three kinds of education: formal education, nonformal education and informal education. Meanwhile, according to Kembara (2007), Homeschooling is an alternative education and it is also known as home education or home learning. There are three kinds of homeschooling: single homeschooling, compound homeschooling and homeschooling community. Teaching technique is the implementation which usually takes place in classroom. There are many techniques of teaching which are considered interesting and useful to help students communicate about topic related, such as dialogue, role-playing, games, story telling and songs. The purposes of this study were: (1) To know the technique that used in teaching English at “Sekolah Dolan” Homeschooling Community and (2) To know why the tutor at “Sekolah Dolan” Homeschooling Community used those techniques. This study used descriptive qualitative design. The subject of the study is one of the tutors in “Sekolah Dolan” Homeschooling Community. The data were obtained through interview and observation. The findings of this study showed that the tutor at “Sekolah Dolan” Homeschooling Community used several techniques in teaching English. They were: games, songs, instruction and story telling. The reason of the tutor used those techniques in teaching English were: games make students more creative, create fun teaching, enjoyable and cheerful condition; song technique made students easily memorize the vocabularies in a song; translation technique using audiovisual to create an entertaining teaching and learning process; story telling technique made students to be confident when speaking in front of public and also increase students’ vocabularies. Based on the research findings, games, songs, translation and story telling techniques are used by the tutor. The tutor chose the fun, enjoyable and entertaining techniques to teach the students because by teaching relaxly, students could easily absorb English lesson that given by the tutor.
