Abstract

Peer assessment is as an arrangement in which individuals consider the number, level, values, quality, or success of products such as peers or learning outcomes with similar status. Peer assessment is commonly used in formative assessment.At English Department there is a lecturer that still applied peer assessment as formative assessment in Sentence Building Class. This research aims to clarify the implementation of peer assessment, to discover the problems faced by lecturer in implementing peer assessment, and to resolve the problems faced by lecturer in implementing peer assessment on Sentence Building Class in English Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. This research used descriptive qualitative research desain. The subject of this study was one lecturer who teaches and applies peer assessment on Sentence Building class at second semester academic year 2019 in English Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. It used two instruments to get the data, they are observation and interview. The result of this research in implementing peer assessment, the lecturer explaining to the students the roles and chose their peer and asked the students to exchange their paper. Then, the students assessed their peer and the lecturer asked the students to put their own name on the papers they edited. After the students assessed their peer, the lecturer asked the students to get their papers back. And the last, the lecturer asked the students to resubmit their paper. There were some problems in implementing peer assessment, they are the lecturer assumed that all students have the same skills but in fact the students have different skill, the students have lack in grammar, the students have lack understanding in structure of writing. The way used by lecturer to overcome the problems are, the lecturer conveying the material as well as possible, the lecturer gave guidance or workshop to the students in one week or two weeks about grammar or structure of paragraph based on material that the students still don’t understand about that.
