Abstract
To make successful teaching and learning process, teachers need a certain curriculum as a teaching plan to help them. As the importance of curriculum, the syllabus also holds the important role to help improve educational practices and to achieve the goal of teaching learning. In syllabus development, the teachers have to create a good syllabus in order to make students understand the materials easily. Related to the statement above, this study was conducted to know the problem of developing syllabus faced by English teachers at SMPN 03 Batu. The research design of this study was descriptive research because the writer wanted to describe the current status of phenomenon. The current status of phenomenon in this research was the problem of developing syllabus faced by English teachers. In this research, the writer took three English teachers as a research subject. The instruments which used in this study were documentation and interview. The result of the study showed that the English teachers who developed syllabus faced problems in developing syllabus. The writer found six problems faced by English teachers at SMPN 03 Batu in developing syllabus. They were the materials in curriculum that was insufficient, the school facilities that was insufficient, low student motivation, some materials that were not appropriate with the curriculum and the student need, and the indicator that was not appropriate with the textbook.
