Abstract
Idiom is a part of English which is applied by native speakers when having conversation. Idiom is words or phrases whose meaning cannot be understood just by seeing the individual word. The use of idiom is also applied in movie. Movie uses idiom to make the conversation sound more natural. Idiom itself has 6 types and 4 typologies. This research is done to answer two research questions as follows: what are the types of English idiomatic found in Dumb and Dumber movie and what are the typologies of English idiomatic expressions found in Dumb and Dumber movie. This research is aimed to find out the types and typologies of English idiomatic in Dumb and Dumber movie. This research uses qualitative design and uses human instrument to obtain the data. The object of this research is English idiomatic expressions found in Dumb and Dumber movie. The researcher found 130 idioms in Dumb and Dumber movie. The detail of the result shows that similes have 8%, binominals have 2%, proverbs have 2%, euphemisms have 1%, cliche and fixed statements have 85%, and other languages have 2%. Cliche and fixed statements is the most dominant types because cliche and fixed statements is mostly used and heard in daily conversation. On the other hand, the details of idioms that belong to typology show that encoding has 65%, decoding has 35%, formal has 22%, substantive has 78%, grammatical has 92%, extra-grammatical has 8%, with pragmtic point has 20%, and without pragmatic point has 80%. Encoding, substantive, grammatical, without pragmatic point are the most dominant typology because typology of idiom is part of grammatical construction in idiom that is applied in daily conversation. The researcher suggests the EFL learners to learn idiom in order to be able to easily understand when reading text with many idioms.
