Abstract

Figurative language constitutes a unique way that is used in a language to touch someone’s emotion or feeling. Sentence or expression could be called as a figurative language if it has a deeper meaning and it cannot be described from the literal meaning. Nowadays, figurative language can be used in unwritten and written form. In the unwritten form, figurative language can be found in movie, radio and so on. Meanwhile, in the written form, figurative language can be found in comic especially in webtoon or web comic The purpose of this research was to analyze the figurative languages that were used in Yumi’s Cells webtoon. This research was purposed to find out (1) types of figurative language that were used in Yumi’s Cells webtoon, (2) the meanings of figurative language that were used in Yumi’s Cells webtoon and (3) the dominant type of figurative language that was used in Yumi’s Cells webtoon. This research used qualitative design to conduct this study. The data were taken from the web comic or webtoon of Yumi’s Cells webtoon from episode 1 up to episode 50. The research instrument in this research was the researcher herself and supported by some documents about figurative language and Yumi’s Cells webtoon itself. This research revealed that there are 45 figurative languages that were used in Yumi’s Cells webtoon from episode 1 up to episode 50 that have been divided into 9 types of figurative language which are allegory, apostrophe, euphemism, hyperbole, idiom, metaphor, paradox, personification, and simile. Then, there are 4 unique sentences that have two types of figurative language for each sentence which are idiom and simile. From 1 up to 50 episodes of Yumi’s Cells webtoon, the connotative meaning is mostly used because figurative language constitutes a language that has a deeper meaning and it is included in connotative meaning. From all the types of figurative language found in Yumi’s Cells webtoon, idiom has the dominant result that was found in Yumi’s Cells webtoon. Idiom has been mostly used because idiom is a popular thing that is used in a language especially in daily conversation. Idiom also helps to create humorous mental image that can touch someone’s emotions or feelings.
