Abstract

Method is one component of teaching learning process. It offers the teachers alternative to make the students better in their learning activities. Because of the method, the teacher will be able to transfer information more easily, select the resources and define the roles of students. Not only should the experienced teachers apply the methods of teaching, but also the student teachers or teachers in training must know the method of teaching. Student teachers or teachers in training must know how to use a certain method in teaching learning process because they will be real teachers. There are several methods in teaching English, such as grammar-translation method, audio-lingual method, direct method, cooperative learning method, etc. This study described about the methods used by the student teachers in teaching English, the implementation of the methods and the reason why they used those methods in teaching English at SMAN 02 Batu. This study used descriptive qualitative research. The data were collected in the form of words/pictures rather than numbers. The subject of the study was the student teachers or teachers in training of eight semester of English department at UMM who thought English subject in the first grade at SMAN 02 Batu. The data were obtained through participant observation and semi-structure interview. The result of this study showed that the student teachers or teachers in training implemented four methods. They were; audio-lingual method especially in listening subject, direct method especially in teaching speaking and reading subject, grammar-translation method especially in teaching writing and reading subject. Then, STAD (Student Teams Achievement Divisions) was also used especially in writing subject. After that, the student teachers implemented those methods through three stages; they were pre-activities, whilst-activities, post-activities. Moreover, the first grade student teachers at SMAN 02 Batu implemented audio-lingual method, direct method, grammar-translation method and STAD (cooperative learning method) in teaching English because those methods could help the teacher create effective teaching learning activities. Therefore, most of the students enjoyed and motivated in learning English
