Abstract

Speaking Civility Violation frequently happens in delivering opinions. It happens because the speaker is lack of knowledge about the speaking civility, so that the speaker may offend the opponent. In addition, the speaking civility violation frequently happens in the debate forums; for example at Trans 7 Mata Najwa show. The speaking civility violation can be seen through the words and sentences used by the debaters in expressing their opinion in public. According to the issue, the problems’ statement of this study was; how is the speaking civility violation form that spoken by Badan Pemenangan Nasional (BPN) and the Tim Kampanye Nasional (TKN) spokesman and what are the aspects that cause it happens. Based on the problems’ statement above, the researcher found that there was a speaking civility violation from of Geoffrey Leech's theory which is classified into six Maxims; wisdom, generosity, praise, humility, agreement, and sincerity. Furthermore, the aspects that caused the speaking civility violation were: direct criticism with the rant, emotional sense of the speaker, protective of the opinions, deliberately accused the opponent, and deliberately motivated the opponent. Descriptive qualitative method was applied in this study by using pragmatic approach. The data source of this study was Trans 7 Mata Najwa show. The data were in a form of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences that were spoken by the debaters. From the findings and discussion of this study, it can be concluded that many of the debaters did the speaking civility violation by using rude and impolite speech. It happened because the debaters wanted their arguments might be trusted by the public than their opponent. In this case, the debaters not only did the speaking civility violation to the opponent, but they also did it to the third party being discussed.
