Abstract

The use of aluminum in the automotive industry has continued to increase since 1980, particularly aluminum alloys used for the manufacture of pistons, engine blocks, cylinder heads and valves. Aluminum (Al) is one of the non ferrous metals which has several advantages, including having a light specific gravity, corrosion resistance, and good electrical conductivity. However, the integration of aluminum with copper (Cu) causes a decrease in the flowability (fluidity) of duralumin, causing this alloy to have a long feeding range and a low castability. Long feeding ranges and poor castability can trigger defects in castings, including porosity. Al-Cu casting is in accordance with the impact testing standard ASTM E23 by using the charpy test. The variation of the addition of Copper powder as reinforcement of 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% in the aluminum alloy matrix with the Impact and Porosity Test. The impact price of the addition of Cu increases an increase of 5% by 0.811782 Joule / mm2, because the higher the hardness of the variation of Cu alloys on Al-Cu aluminum alloys, the hardness value increases. In the porosity test with the addition of 20% Cu obtained a value of 61% because the pore volume value in this specimen is influenced by the presence of air when pouring molten metal into the sand mold.
