Abstract

Teaching strategy is chosen specific strategy planned and used activities which facilitate and help student to achieve the aim of teaching-learning process. It also a certain task to delivering the lesson or solving the problem in conveying the material in the class. Therefore, teaching young learners is not easy. It is a must for the teacher to select the teaching strategy by considering many aspect, such as learning condition, teaching-learning sources, and also students’ needs and characteristics. This research was conducted for the purpose of analysing the English teaching strategies used in teaching the third grade at Islamic Elementary School 1 (MIN) Malang. In addition, the researcher aimed to investigate the teacher’s way in implementing the strategies. Qualitative design was employed within this research. The data were taken from the teacher who teach the third grade students at Islamic Elementary School 1 (MIN) Malang. The data were the teachers’ answer as the result of interview, observation checklist, the observation field note, and the document analysis. The result of this reseach showed that there are six strategies used by the teachers of the third grade at Islamic Elementary School 1 (MIN) Malang. They were reading strategy, telling story, pantomime strategy, game, small-group discussion, and singing a song in teaching English. The selections of these strategy were based on the theme used by teachers in delivering the material. In applying reading and telling story strategy is appropriate with the young learners’ characteristic when the teachers were supported by supporting media, like picture, flash, video, song, and power point slide. The teacher also used pantomime and game strategy which focused on building students competition and participation. Furthermore, small-group discussion strategy was used because it was appropriate for interpersonal intellegence. Those strategy would build fun and joy in teaching-learning process.
