Abstract

The purpose of this study is to know whether there is a significant correlation or not between languange learning strategies (metacognitive and cognitive) and students’ ability in Junior High School 2 Gedeg Mojokerto. The population of this research was the students of VII grade. They were divided into seven classes 7A, 7B, 7C, 7D, 7E, 7F and 7G in Junior High School 2 Gedeg Mojokerto. The sample is taken through purposive sampling. The class VII F was chosen for the sample of this research that contains 30 students as sample from the population. The method used in this research was a quantitative method and the technique used in this research was a correlational technique. In collecting the data, the documentation of students’ English subject scores and questionnaire are used. The scores of English subject were collected from the teacher of English subject in Junior High School 2 Gedeg Mojokerto. Moreover, SPSS was used to analyze the English subject scores and the result of questionnaire data. The result of this research showed that the H1 is accepted, it means that there is significant correlation between language learning strategies (metacognitive and cognitive) and students’ ability. It is proved by the value of significant 0.001 < 0.05. Meanwhile, based on the data interpretation of pearson correlation, 0.567 showed that the correlation value is on the medium correlation, in other words, there is medium correlation berween language learning strategies (metacognitive and cognitve) and students’ ability. Students’ ability means the learners with a level of English proficiency that use language learning strategies more often. The learners who used the language strategies are successful learners. In conclusion, there is a positive correlation between language learning strategies (metacognitive and cognitive) and students’ ability. Students who have employed language learning strategies in learning process more frequently got better score in English lessons also increased their ability.
