Abstract

Speaking is an interactive process of constructing meaning that involves producing, receiving, and processing information. In teaching speaking, the tutors or teachers are using different technique to conduct teaching-learning process. Technique has an important role in teaching as its aim is reaching the purpose of teaching and learning process in which the teacher knows and uses the technique corresponding to the characteristics of student especially in learning language.Since technique has an important role in teaching-learning process, this research was aimed to find out the teaching technique used by the tutors in teaching speaking at Foreign Language Center (FLC) Pare Kediri, investigate the difficulties faced by the tutors, and reveal its solutions. This research used descriptive design as it was conducted to obtain and comprehend some phenomena, related to the teaching technique used by the tutors in teaching speaking at Foreign Language Center (FLC) Pare Kediri. The subjects of this research were involving two tutors and two classes in which each class consisted of 20 and 15 students. The data collection was conducted during one week, 6 days of observation and 1 day of interview process. Additionally,the instruments of this research were using observation field note and interview guide. In conclusion, the finding showed that there were five techniques used by the tutors, namely: discussion, role play, brainstorming, storytelling, and debate. Besides,the difficulties faced by the tutors in teaching speaking came from the students, such as: they talked less, were still shy to speak in front of class, were not knowing the updated information or topic given, and were lazy to join the class. Finally in solving the difficulties, the tutors suggested some solutions, such as: bringing a storybook as an inspiration for the students, inviting the students to practice both inside or outside of classroom, asking the students to find and read news in social media, and lastly motivating the students.
