Abstract

Forging is giving shape towards work object that is made from metal and easily stretched by hitting or pressing with incandescent. Forging belongs to the oldest hand-crafting in giving shape towards metal, forging by using hands will hold its role in the future as well, such as for forging art objects that is creese, chopper, sickle, knife, etc. The objection of this study is to analyze the microstructure on overlapping steel 4, 6, 8 and stainless steel and to know the value of hardness on the overlapping steel 4. 6, 8 and stainless steel. On the microstructure analysis and hardness of the overlapping steel 4, 6, 8 and stainless steel, the research method started from the preparation of the research, then making the material, after the tested material was ready to use, the next step was forging, after all the tested specimen had passed the forging step so the next step was quenching process, then after all the tested specimen had passed the quenching process, the next step was cleaning the tested specimen surface using sand-paper size 100-5000 before going to the testing process, from the microstructure and hardness test process, it would get data and from the data, the test result could be concluded. From the result of microstructure analysis and hardness of the overlapping steel 4, 6, 8 and stainless steel, there was a process that was not done by the researcher that was holding time process and it made the microstructure on the overlapping steel 4, 6, 8, had high percentage on perlit, and the highest amount was the overlapping steel 4, while the result of HRC on average, the overlapping steel 6 had the highest amount. It was caused by less evenly distributed of the forging process which made the microstructure became random structure. The proof could be seen on the average table of HRC.
