Abstract

Writing has an important place in the language learning process as it is one of the four major skills. Successful writing can be seen from the terms of the students’ motivation that they have when they are writing because students who have high motivation they will achieve good score. Motivation is an attribute that move us to do or not dosomething. Narrative text is a kind of text that tells the activities or events in the past. The narrative text hascomponents, such as generic structure and linguistic features.This research was conducted to find out how the students’ motivation in writing narrative text and the factors influenced the students at the ninth grade level of SMP Diponegoro Batu. This research used a mixed-method research design to explain the study more deeply about the students’ motivation in writing narrative text. The participants in this study were 14 students. A distribution questionnaire and interview were employed as the instruments to collect the data. Based on the data analysis, the researcher found students’ motivation at the ninth grade level students was high. Besides, there are four factors influenced the students’ motivation. There are interests and goals from intrinsic motivation factors. Besides, rewards and punishment from extrinsic motivation factors.
