Abstract

Speaking is very important communication tool for life and it demands students to speak well and correctly. One of the problems that are often faced in speaking is anxiety. This research is focused to find out the anxiety experienced by students when speaking in front of the class using English or doing presentation in. The purposes of this research were (1) to find out the type of anxiety for students when speaking in front of the class (2) to find out the factors for English Language Education Department Students’ anxiety when doing presentations in front of the class. Qualitative approach is employed for this study. The subjects of this study were second semester students majoring in English education at the one of private universities in Malang. This study uses interview guides as instruments in collecting data. This study revealed that there were two findings related to the research question. First, there are two types of anxiety experienced by students; trait anxiety and state anxiety. Second, the factors that influence student anxiety are communication apprehension, fear of negative judgment or evaluation, fear of making mistakes, lack of confidence, and no preparation.
