Abstract

Writing is one of the important skills in the acquisition of english language. However, teaching writing is not an easy task, it takes patience and dexterity of a teacher to ensure that the learning target can be achieved. In addition, the teacher is also endeavored to be creative and ensure that the teachings delivered can be implemented properly by the students. In order to achieve the teaching and learning target, the teachers must pay attention of choosing the resources and support materials when teaching writing. The materials should not merely an instruction, however, the materials that will be the best in helping the students learn to write. The study focuses on the kinds of teaching techniques, the problems and also the solution in applying teaching techniques that were used by Mr. McCourt in Teacher Man memoir written by Frank McCourt. This study is a qualitative research using descriptive research design. The object of the study was a memoir entitled Teacher Man written by Frank McCourt. The research data were taken from paragraphs, dialogues and events in the memoir. Moreover, the main instrument used in collecting the data is the researcher herself using document analysis technique. The result of this study shows that there are four teaching techniques used by Mr. McCourt in teaching writing. The teaching techniques are discussion, reading, singing and writing technique. There were some problems found by Mr. McCourt in applying the teaching techniques such as the students' lack of interest, the teacher's self-doubt, the students' uninterest in writing and the students' insecurity of their grade. Mr. McCourt solved the problems in applying teaching techniques by doing the following things. Firstly, the teacher find an interesting teaching techniques. Secondly, the teacher learned how to teach comfortably.Thirdly, the teacher supported the students. Finally, the teacher asked the students to evaluate themselves.
