Abstract

University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) is an educational institution with Islamic background. This research is based on the presence of Christian students studying at UMM. This issues sometimes become a problem when Christian students have to fit in to college activities and lecture curricula which tend to focus on Islamic discussion, and also to communicate with Muslim students in particular. This adjustment can be done well if supported by good interpersonal communication. Therefore, it is necessary to study about how the process of relationship development by both Christian and Muslim students in their friendship with their different religions at UMM. The subject of this research is Protestant Christian students in Communication Science department (UMM) because Communication science is department with the most Christian students from other Departments. The researcher use the Five Stage Model by Joseph A. DeVito as a research analysis aid. The Five Stage Model describes the process of developing relationships through the stages of contact, involvement, intimacy, destruction, and disconnection. The research method used is case study, with the type of research is qualitative. The researcher collect the data using observation, interview, and documentation. Results of this study indicate that all stages in the relationship development model are experienced and occur naturally in the process of relationship development by Christian students at UMM. When the subject experiences development in the relationship development stage, the higher the stage through to the closer relations of relations being stronger. Religious differences do not have a major influence in the process of developing relationships, the results of the study illustrate that religious differences even support between individuals in building good relationships due to high tolerance.
