Abstract

Background: High blood cholesterol levels (hypercholesterolemia) is a serious problem that causes most cases of coronary heart disease (CHD). Celery leaves and avocados contain antihypercholesterol and can prevent atherosclerosis. The purpose of this study was to determine the differences in effectiveness of celery leaf extract and avocado extract on changes in total cholesterol levels in white rats with hypercholesterolemia. Method: This research is an experimental research ( true experiment reseach ) using the post test only control group design. The population used in this study was 24 male white rats (Rattus Novagicus Strain Wistar), aged 2-3 months, and weight 100-200 grams. Interventions were given for 7 weeks with the control group given 10% fructose, the celery group given 10% fructose and celery leaf extract, and the avocado group were given 10% fructose and the avocado extract. The data obtained were analyzed using SPSS independent t test. Results: Data on total cholesterol levels in the control group 142.88 mg / dl, celery group 123.50 mg / dl and 96.25 avocado group were analyzed and tested by one-way ANOVA showed significant differences between the two groups with a significance value of 0,000 (p <0.01) so there are significant differences between groups. Discussion: Celery Leaf extract and avocado extract contain tannin, vitamin C, niacin, and oleic acid and it rich in Monoansaturated Fatty Acids (MUFA) which can affect total cholesterol levels. Conclusion: The differences in total cholesterol levels in the celery group and the avocado group is very different because it showed a significant value of <0.01. So it can be concluded that the avocado extract is very important in changing total cholesterol level wich given during 7 weeks of intervention.
