Abstract

The community of Griya Malang Satelit (GMS) Sawojajar, which is only 30 years old with a population of ± 20 thousand inhabitants, inhabits 7,000 housing units standing on an area of 180 acres. The GMS housing area is divided into 8 area blocks consisting of block A to block H. Block C was chosen as the research location with a population of 730 households (KK), consisting of 4 RWs, 25 RTs and heterogeneous communities, coming from various regions in Indonesia, forming a pluralistic society with quite diverse social differentiation and open social stratification which enabled social mobilization to occur. This diversity should lead to horizontal and vertical conflicts, but in reality they live quietly, peacefully, interactive socially with social relations of mutual respect, togetherness and solid social integration and mutual comfort. This society has many communities (poly-communalism), overlap of traditional values with modern (poly-normative) values and functionalize traditional values with racial methods (poly-functional). Reflecting on the theory of Fred W. Riggs, the GMS housing community is referred to as a "prismatic" society. The social phenomenon continues to be maintained and enhanced through distinctive behavioral patterns in the form of social integration symbols, so it is interesting to study with the following research objectives: a) identifying symbols of social integration of prismatic communities residents of Griya Malang Satelit housing b) tracing the process of meaning these symbols in creating social integration of prismatic society. c) describing the mechanism of action of symbols in realizing social integration of prismatic society. The theoretical foundation used in this study is the theory of Symbolic Interactionism by George Herbert Mead. This research paradigm follows the social definition paradigm as a qualitative study using observation, interviews, and other documents. This type of research with a phenomenological approach focuses on understanding and interpreting phenomena that are aware of the reality of the object itself. Data analysis uses inductive methods considering complex phenomena such as social situations, social settings in the form of activities, social interactions, and extracting information from subjects or informants that are ongoing throughout the research. The results of the study explain that the symbol of social integration comes from the response of the community's need to express religious, social-cultural, and humanitarian values in their lives, namely, the Tahlilan symbol, Halal bi Halal, Agustusan, RT / RW, PKK, Siskamling and Takziah meetings. The meaning of mythical symbols of social integration refers to values, norms, rules and behavioral guidelines derived from religious, socio-cultural, and humanitarian attitudes: respect, obedience, togetherness, and social care. The working mechanism of the symbol of social integration is a process flow that begins with confidence in religious, social-cultural and humanitarian values that demands patterned behavior that influences perceptions, attitudes, actions, social encounters, social interests, conformity, social rewards to the formation of social integration.
