Abstract

Teaching strategy is important to be implemented in the teaching process because it is used as estimation toward the students’ achievement. A teacher must decide what kinds of strategies will work best in different situation because an appropriate teaching strategy represents the teacher efforts to achieve the teaching process to be more effective and comprehensive. Considering the statement above, the objective of this study were; 1) to know the teaching strategies used by English teacher at second year of SMAN 7 MALANG, 2) to know the problem faced by the teacher in applying teaching strategies, 3) and to know the teachers’ way to solve the problems. The design of this study was descriptive research with two English teachers at second year of SMAN 7 MALANG as research subjects. In collecting data, the writer used two kinds of instruments: observation and interview. The finding showed that the teachers used three kinds of teaching strategies. Those strategies were expository, discovery, and discussion. In addition, teacher A had her own teaching strategy, namely integrated teaching strategy. The problems faced by English teacher in applying teaching strategies were; students were difficult in memorizing and understanding material, the students were passive, students reached incorrect conclusions, the students did not concentrate well because of their own activity. The teacher ways to solve the problems were; the teacher gave examples from students’ daily life, the teacher wrote the unfamiliar terms on the whiteboard, she followed up the explanation with some questions, the teacher motivated students to participate actively by asking occasional questions. Besides, the teacher provided feedback questions or comments from students to measure whether they could make an appropriate conclusion, the teacher guided the students to come to logical conclusion, the teacher gave a clear instruction, time allocation, and gave assignment for the students to submit product, summary, list, or conclusion from discussion they had done. In conclusion, the teaching strategies were applied by the teachers had some weaknesses. Yet, when the students had difficulties and mistakes, the teachers had been ready to help the students by giving guidance to them. The teachers were also motivating the students in order to increase their ability in learning English.
