Abstract

The lack of background knowledge of grammar especially in irregular verb will cause some problems for the students in understanding the English subject in class because the irregular verb is used in written and oral of English. The teacher has to know how to improve the students’ grammar mastery of irregular verb easily. One of the ways to overcome is by implementing flashcard game. It is an interesting medium used for increasing students’ interest in learning process. Those ways can be applied as reinforcement to improve students’ grammar mastery of irregular verb. The Classroom Action Research (CAR) is aimed to improve students’ grammar mastery of irregular verb at second grade students of SMA Diponegoro Malang. The method that is used in CAR to know the result is quantitative. This study was conducted at SMA Diponegoro Malang. The research subjects of this research were second-grade students of Language Class in Class X Bahasa which consisted of 2 classes with 40 students, but the sample that is taken is Class X Bahasa 1 that consists of 20 students. This research was conducted through the following procedures: preliminary study, planning, implementing, observating, reflecting. There was a major indicators used as criteria of success in this research. Since the highest score of the test is 100, the students have to achieve score ≥80 point. The data were gathered from test, observation, and interview. After conducting the observation, the result showed that the mean score of students’ test in preliminary test was 40.05. In Cycle I, the implementation of flashcard game showed the improvement of students’ grammar mastery of irregular verb. The mean score was 75, and it was not successful because the mean score did not pass the passing grade. Nevertheless, the mean score of Cycle II was 83.1, it means the criterion of success was achieved. As the result, all criterion of success were achieved. To sum up, the result of Classroom Action Research (CAR) proven that the implementation of flashcard game could improve students’ grammar mastery of irregular verbs at second grade students of SMA Diponegoro Malang
