This research is to investigate the roles of teachers, especially at the university level and inform the students’ perceptions of the teachers’ r oles in the teaching and learning process of English for Specific Purposes by A basic interpretative study. In this research, the researcher wanted to find how the ESP teachers applied their roles in the classroom so the researcher selected the authoritative teacher as research subject to be representative of ESP teachers at Language Center, , the researcher would apply three methods in data collection: doing an observation, interview which is to gather detailed information of the research questions and giving the questionnaire to the students. Based on findings and discussion, it showed that ESP teachers applied the ESP teacher’s roles in the class. They played their roles as a controller, an assessor, a manager, a resource, a participant, an investigator, and a role model although the percentages of each roles could be different between one meeting and another meeting. It was caused by five reasons namely; limited time, the number of students, activity in the classroom, English skill of ESP class, and level of students. Furthermore, the finding also showed that the students showed positively towards the teacher’s role in the teaching and learning process. It made the activity in the classroom more interesting. However, the teachers and students agreed that the teachers rarely played their role as an investigator.
