Abstract

Learning media can be used as an independent learning resource for students who help students learn, both in the classroom and outside the classroom. Learning media as independent learning resources are still less varied and less able innovations to attract attention for students. The learning process is still done by using the teacher as the main learning source, which still occurs in one school in Pasuruan district, Ma'arif Sukorejo High School. Researchers conducted research at Ma'arif Sukorejo High School in terms of school environment with TOGA (Family Medicinal Plants) plant that includes participatory environment based activities, involving all school residents to participate in environmental management including in the care, planting and utilization of TOGA in the environment schools, as well as the completeness and availability of facilities and infrastructure in schools, the completeness of the media as one source of learning, teacher teaching experience and curriculum decisions. The purpose of this research is to produce print media in the form of TOGA pictorial pocket book to improve the understanding of biodiversity material in grade X high school students. This type of research is Research Development or Research and Development (R & D). The model to be developed in the development of this research refers to the Reasearch and Development (R & D) model of Borg and Gall. Borg and Gall in Sukmadinata (2005) suggest three steps that have been modified in research and development as follows: (1) Introduction study; (2) Model development; (3) Model test. The results of this development research in the form of printed media products, namely TOGA pocket book pictured as a biology learning media that has been through several tests and revisions from experts. Based on feasibility test from media expert, and material expert, instructional media declared very feasible and effective use in learning. Based on the experimental test in the treatment class there was an increase in the understanding of the Biodiversity material that is on the small scale test increased at the posttest average value against the average pretest value (from 58.2 average to 76.2). While the experimental test increased on the average value of posttest to the average pretest value (from the average 65.16 to 79.25) it can be said that the use of effective TOGA pocket book effectively improve the understanding of biodiversity material.
