Abstract

"Faces of Solo" photo book is a form of printed publication of a photographer Maulana Surya in the form of a book that is studied using a street photography approach that is used to narrate narratively about humans and their environment. In the works of Maulana Surya, readers or connoisseurs of photos are invited to see phenomena in a simple way in reality. The selection of the photo itself will be chosen in one year of the "Solo Culture" activity, which consists of seven photos according to the research theme, namely culture and the face of Javanese culture, especially in Solo City. This study uses Roland Barthes's Semiotic Analysis along with the photographic elements in the documentary photo book "Faces of Solo", namely types of photos, shooting techniques, composition, color, angle, shape, format, and light. The results of the study indicate that the Solo community is very civilizing existing traditions and very much preserves the existing historical values seen from the meaning contained in the book "Faces of Solo", the Solo Society also strongly preserves its historical value and does not want to eliminate the values of its ancestors and still thick with culture related to art, so Solo Culture itself has also become a part of their body that is inherent and will not be lost seen from the palace which is the highest place and has the highest value in the Solo community. In addition, the people of Solo highly uphold their ancestors for telling how they carried out the cultural process as a form of demand and protection for the people around the Bengawan Solo river, and also supported by the myths contained in the Suro Culture One which is still very attached to the Solo City Culture that is believed will bring safety from disasters or get prosperity to residents around the river so that the Faces of Solo book means values and art traced both from history and cultural values implied and explicit so that the meaning of the master can be conveyed to readers who see the series of photo stories.
