Abstract

Malang Post is one of newspaper in Malang. As local daily newspaper, Malang Post focused on locality dimension. Malang Post consisted of 20 pages with news proportion about Malang and its region, about 90% consisted of politic, education, adolescent, technology, business, etc. What interesting is, Malang Post is the only printed mass media in Malang which has education special column. Metro Edupolitan is a special column about education which loaded news about education around Malang. Metro Edupolitan existed since 6 years ago along with additional 12 pages into 16 pages. Metro Edupolitan column existed each Monday to Friday. The column existence started from Malang society needs about education information. There found that Malang has title as education city. By the column, Malang Post has intention to be bridge between society and education service provider, so that education in Malang city could be progressed. Metro Edupolitan is a product of Malang Post, the product was a new breakthrough for Malang Newspaper. That’s why Metro Edupolitan was interesting to be discussed deeper from its theoretical and practical aspect. To analyze the construction of education news in Metro Edupolitan, the writer used Norman Fairclough’s discourse analysis. Norman divided into three dimensional discourse analysis, they were: text, discourse practice, and sociocultural practice. Text was analyzed using linguistic approach, discourse practice could be done using interview in media worker in production and text consumption. While sociocultural practice was dimension related with context outside the text. Fairclough analysis focused on structure factor and media work practice connected with economic and media politic needs. Fairclough’s discourse analysis used critical approach, media seen as social room which full of needs. Language in text was representation of the media ideology itself and society owed influence in making meaning interpretation, so that individual couldn’t be free to interpret meaning as their thought. Fairclough’s research method divided into three dimensional, with data collection technique based on observation, interview, and library study. The research result of the three dimensional could be found. They were, first: in micro analysis, that was text. There found tendency of relation build in text using government approach and dominant group (education service provider). Text could not describe the event in balance way (cover bothside). Secondly, in meso­ analysis, which was text production, the birth of Metro Edupolitan was a support of Malang Post program to the government. Through Metro Edupolitan, Malang Post wanted to fulfill education information in Malang society and government society program publication access which increase education. Third, education city image has been created since 40 years ago. Some educational institution from basic level to university strengthen Malang image as education city.
