Abstract

This study discusses voluntary interpretations / sign interpreters in communication with members of the Akar Tuli community. The researcher took the subject from the member of Malang Tuli Root who was a sign interpreter. The researcher tried to discuss the voluntary self-interpretation / sign language interpreter with the aim of describing the meaning of the sign language interpreter in the communication of deaf persons and also as a companion during lectures and community activities. The research method used is a qualitative approach with descriptive type and uses the case study method and analyzes the phenomena that occur on the subject. The subjects of this study were volunteers / sign interpreters for members of the Akar Tuli Malang. Data collection techniques used are observation and interview. This research shows that being a sign interpreter must also take part in some activities in advance such as attending sign language courses and all activities held by Deaf. The results of this study show that the meaning of the Sign Language / Volunteer interpreter as bridging when communicating with new people and giving deaf friends information that is not known by deaf friends. There are two results, the first of the three subjects interpreting themselves as sign language interpreters when mentoring and events alone, but for the other two subjects interpreting themselves as friends or friends because according to the two subjects do not want a distinction for Deaf Friends and Listeners and still feel unworthy to interpret themselves as sign interpreters.
