Abstract

Literature is what is voiced, expressed and invented from humanity fact which can be studied further. One of literary works is movie. Dangerous Mindsmovie discusses teaching and learning activity in Parkmount High School, California. Moreover, this reseach talks about the teaching method used by Johnson as an English teacher in that school. This research aims to identify types of teaching method used by Johnson in Dangerous Minds movie, the implementation of teaching methods used and the problem and solution used by Johnson to overcome it. This research used descriptive qualitative research design and mimetic approach. Therefore, the research object was teaching methods while data was obtained through events and dialogues of the movie. The result of research showed there are three teaching methods used by Johnson. They are Total Physical Response (TPR), Grammar Translation Method (GTM) and Community Language Learning (CLL). Johnson required students to practice karate in TPR method while in GTM, she required them to identify part of speech and analyze a poem. Further, in implementing CLL Johnson held groups discussion and required them to find similar poem directed by Dylan Thomas and Bob Dylan. However,the problems faced in implementingthose methods wereJohnson was called by Principal because teaching karate was against school policy, students ignored even dispelled Johnsonbecause most students came from bad society backgrounds with little educational skill. Moreover, students namely Emilio was trouble maker and influenced others. Fortunately, Johnson gave an A in beginning semester, she motivated and approached them sincerely. She often gave rewards to appreciate their achievement, such as she gave chocolate, invited go to vacation and had a dinner together.
