Abstract

A few research have attempted to investigate the effectiveness of self-assessment. However, some concerns to the use of self-assessment were still found. Moreover, empiricial studies on the beneficial effects of self-assessment remain rare in Indonesia. Considering those gaps, this present study attempted to investigate the effectiveness of self-assessmentand learners’ perception about self-assessment in the English Foreign Language students especially in writing skills. This study used quasi-experimental design in two classes. Thirty learners of two English intermediate writing classes were assigned into two groups : self-assessment group and teacher assessment group. The learners produced three new pieces of opinion writing (pre test, treatment writing, and post test). To find out students' perceptions about using self-assessment on writing skills a questionnaires were used. This questionnaire is given to students who are given treatment, and consists of two types specifically open and close ended questionnaires. The closed ended questionnaire consists of 24 questions designed to understand the ways in which students feel they have improved as a writer. This questionnaire adapted from John Hedgcock' Academic Writing Self-assessment Instrument 1998 which consists of 6 likert scales. The finding suggested that self-assessment is comparable with teacher assessment. Students are able to make judgement about the quality of their writing in a manner consistent with those made by teacher, although the differences was not statically significant. Moreover, the study demonstrated that the practice of self-assessment has exerted positive influence on learners’ perception of their writing achievement.
