Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe and explore private speech in solving elementary students' mathematical problems. The approach used in this research is a qualitative approach, with the type of research description. The research subjects were five fourth grade students of SDN 1 Landungsari consisting of four female students and one male student who used private speech by taking the subject based on preliminary observations made by the researcher. Data collection methods in this study include: test description items, interview guides and observations and audio-visual recordings then the data are analyzed and described. The results of this study (1) The form of private speech used by students in solving mathematical problems is different; P1 uses private speech in the form of silent and whispering lip movements; P2 uses private speech in the form of inaudible murmurs; P3 uses private speech in the form of inaudible murmurs and whispers; P4 uses private speech in the form of inaudible murmurs and whispers; LK uses private speech in the form of inaudible murmurs and whispers. (2) The motives of private speech owned by students are different; P1 and P2 use private speech with the motif of difficulty in solving problems; P3 uses private speech with the motive for difficulty in understanding the words in the problem as well as the presence of habitual factors; P4 uses private speech with the motif of difficulty in understanding the words in the problem, difficulty in solving problems and the existence of habitual factors; and LK uses private speech with the motive for difficulty in solving problems and because of habitual factors.
