Abstract

This study focused on the effectiveness of using WH-Question to improve students’ writing ability. This research was done to improve writing ability in using WH-Question at SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Malang. Therefore, the researcher intended to know the improvement of writing ability in using WH-Question and the researcher compared 7A as an experiment class and 7B as a control class. A quantitative approach was chosen based on the data that was in the form of numbers. The sample of the research was the seventh-graders at SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Malang. To collect the data, the researcher took one class and it included 37 students. They were divided into two groups, namely: the experimental group consisting of 12 students and a control group consisting of 25 students. The researcher applied ANOVA to analyse the data, the significance was 0.05. In this research, the result showed that the post-test mean score of the experimental group was 42.56 and the mean score of the control group was 70.78 after giving treatment. The pre-test result of significance was 0.00 < 0.05. It could be seen that was a significant difference. In conclusion, there was an effect of WH-Question that could increase the students’ writing ability especially for seventh-grader at SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Malang.
