Abstract

English Independent Study is one of the methods to learn English as a second language which helps the students to improve their English skill. One of the ways to increase this skill can be facilitated by joining ths English community such as ESSCO. This community is a new community in University of Muhammadiyah Malang that specialized in helping students to develop their speaking ability. Moreover, it drives the students to learn outside the classroom. By following the ESSCO’s program, the students have more time to practice speaking. The research problem describes how the students’ perceive of ESSCO’s program in speaking skill development. Furthermore, the objective of this study is to investigate the student’s perception of ESSCO’s program in terms of speaking skill development. This study was designed as quantitative research. The researcher used a questionnaire as the instrument to collect the data. The questionnaire adopted from Sinaga, 2018; & Zulvy Melviza, Syamsul Bahri Ys1, 2017. Therefore, a technique for gathering information in the form of survey by a list of the question posed to respondents through samples from a population (Kraemer, 1993). The researcher took 20 members of ESSCO as the sample which consist of 10 males and 10 females. The data were obtained from the students’ perception of ESSCO’s program in speaking skill as the quantitative data. Afterwards, the result of the quantitative data was grouped and ranked from the highest into the lowest. The highest’ result in the first aspect showed that 48% percentage of the ESCCO’s members felt fun and comfortable with the class atmosphere by hitting. Other than that, the second aspect showed that 52% members admitted the chiefs of ESSCO speak English during the ESSCO’s program. Thus, the ESSCO’s members perceived that ESSCO’s program played an important role to support them in developing speaking well.
