Abstract

One of the most important languages in the world is English because it is as the primary international communication. It is the reason why many people want to study it. English is the first foreign language taught to students of elementary school. Teaching English to young learners is different from that to adult because they have their own characteristic. In order to facilitate young learners to master English, the teacher needs to teach vocabulary before teaching more about English. The teachers should have appropriate teaching technique so that the students will enjoy and learn the language easily. In research, the writer intended to investigate vocabulary teaching technique used by the English teacher for four graders of SDN Torongrejo 1 Batu and the teacher’s way to apply the English vocabulary teaching technique. The design of this research was qualitative research since the data were in the form of words. The subject of this study is the English teacher who taught at SDN Torong Rejo 1 Batu. In collecting the data, the writer collected them through three instruments; they were, observation checklist, document analysis and interview guide. The finding showed that the teacher used three kinds of techniques included in teacher centered approach namely: Visual, Verbal (example of type as the elements of verbal technique), and Translation. During lessons, the teacher applied the visual technique by using a video and applied example of type as the elements of verbal technique by categorizing both of pleasant and unpleasant words and the teacher applied translation, the teacher allowed the students to write the meaning of words from English into Indonesian. Through these techniques, the students were more active in learning process.
