Abstract

Almost half a century ago (51 years) Freeport was controlled by Indonesians, exploited gold and copper in the province of West Papua, district of Timika. Freeport dredged mine wealth on mount grasberg and left a poor track record. They conducted human rights violations, causes environmental damages and make unfair tax and royalty payments. In an effort to control Freeport and uphold and its constitutions, Mr Presiden Joko Widodo issued a government policy regulation No. 1 of 2014 concerning the ban on the exportation of law minerals to the foreign companies, that freeport must convert KK ( contract of work) to IUPK (special mining business permit), Divesment of 51% shares, construction of smelter factory in Timika-Papua. This research aims to explain the Indonesian government’s political and economical policies towards freeport. The explanation of the government’s policies regarding freeport can be explained using the dependency perspective. The method of research used is self descriptive and the datas collection techniques are carried out through researching of libraries. Resulting from this research is the Indonesian’s political and economical policy towards the construction of the freeport smelter in Timika-Papua. This is a strategic step towards releasing its dependence from developed countries (United State Of America) in terms of becoming independent in the economy and also simultaneously upholding Indonesia’s constitutional mandate to controling mining strategys in the country.
