Abstract

An ecosystem refers to mutual relationship between an organism and its environment. One of the biological resources playing essential role in aquatic ecosystem is plankton. Plankton, especially phytoplankton, is an important factor for fish and various biota living in fresh, brackish, or sea water since it is the primary producer of food in the cycle of food chain. This study aimed to identify the abundance of plankton on both daytime and nighttime and to figure out the community structure of the plankton in the campus pool of Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang. This is a descriptive-quantitative study and was conducted on March – April 2019 on daytime and nighttime using plankton net. The results showed that based on the identification of daytime water sample, 12 species were found, i.e. Diatoma vulgare, Gomphonema sp, Pediastrum sp, Peridinium sp, Trachelomonas sp, Tabellaria sp, Aphanizomenon sp, Closterium sp, Oedogonium sp, Cystodinium sp, Pandornia sp, and Scenedesmus p. Meanwhile, in the nighttime water, 13 species were found, i.e. Copepod nauplius, Gastropus hyptonus, Gastropus stylifer, Monostyla bulla, Oocystis sp, Pediastrum sp, Tabellaria sp, Navicula sp, Ascomorpha saltans, Mougeotia sp, Fragilaria sp, Barnacle nauplius, and Monommata longiseta.\ The total abundance of plankton in the pool of Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang in the daytime is higher than in the nighttime. The highest number is on the first sample test in the daytime with total number of 4533,3. Meanwhile, the lowest number is on the second sample test in the nighttime with total number of 1467. This study result can be used as biology learning source for the tenth graders.
